Achilles Wheel is a California band that blurs the lines between genres with a mix of infectious high energy dance beats and stark lyrical ballads. Roots Rock storytelling combined with dance hall psychedelia.
Much like life itself, their music breathes in and out with joy and pain, hurtling forward like a wheel, intent on hope and love. They play hard as a way to break down walls and celebrate life. The harsh light of the modern world does not diminish their idealism as we struggle to live free and have a good time… and in the end – hopefully make a difference. Achilles Wheel fearlessly sings out to these times, the here and now.
The Wheel began 2018 with the release of their 4th studio album “Sanctuary”. From sweaty dance halls to intimate acoustic shows, the band never tires of relating to their audience and will keep playing until the conversation is complete.
“These Sierra Mountain improvisational-spirited rockers never paid much mind as to how other “jam-bands” do it, nor do they let their influences determine their sound.” – The Grateful Web
The Friends of Achilles Wheel Highway Cleanup is a monthly volunteer event dedicated to picking up trash along the road in the band’s hometown of Nevada City. Battle against the rogue litter that inexplicably escapes from people’s cars and you’ll earn a ticket to the next show!
Check the events page on the site and the Achilles Wheel Facebook for updates on upcoming shows and cleanup events; don’t forget to follow them on their new Instagram account: @achilleswheelband for more original content from the band.
“For fairly obvious reasons, I hear from a lot of so called jam bands. None have impressed me the way Achilles Wheel did. They certainly can jam – Paul’s rhythm guitar is first rate and Jonny’s lead can make a stone dance. But what so many jam bands lack AW has in spades, namely, truly excellent song – writing, primarily from Paul but from other member, too. Lyrics and melodies both – these are songs you remember – and will.”
Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead Publicist and Author
Alex Jordan was born to music, playing first trumpet, then bass, then guitar—and always singing. His musical influences ranged from jazz to musical theatre. He studied his father’s extensive CD collection, in particular the Grateful Dead section, which considerably expanded his perception of what was music. Listening to a live album, he had a revelation when he heard a passage in which silence was clearly part of the music. “It was quantifiably, certifiably, distinctly music, and it was dead silence. I’d never heard anything like that. I don’t know that I became a Dead Head at that moment, but I sure got it.”
Alex attended Cal State Long Beach, which had the only public music conservatory west of the Mississippi at the time, but soon his growing friendship with the Grateful Dead cover band Cubensis became his most important learning experience. “I’d been playing guitar throughout, but with college winding down I started really focusing on guitar more. I started bringing new kinds of equipment around for Craig (Marshall, the lead guitarist for Cubensis) to check out, which led to my becoming a member of their road crew. They knew I played, because I could sound check their gear. Before long, he became the rhythm guitarist’s substitute.
“This was 2013, and I played about half of the shows with them that year. So I went from crew to crew-and-sub. One of the shows, in May 2013, Grahame Lesh and Friends opened up for us—they had already chosen the new name, Midnight North (MN), but had booked the show before their decision. We really connected, partly because we were the same age, unlike me and Cubensis.”
After sitting in on a few shows in late 2013, in 2014 he became a full-time member of Midnight North. He started on electric guitar, and then “when it was discovered that I knew my way around a keyboard,” he played keys as well. He helped record the studio albums Scarlet Skies and Under the Lights, as well as two live albums. He also became part of the Terrapin Crossroads rotation, which meant he was playing with a shifting repertoire group of thirty or forty first rate musicians.
All the while, he was writing songs. Since Midnight North already had a full complement of songwriters, he struck out on his own, and The Subtle Exhibitionist is his solo debut.
Emerging out of the swamps of Southern California, The Alligators were formed to celebrate the music of Grateful Dead, “Pigpen” and Beyond! …
Simply put, The Alligators are here to party hard and Rock you!
The bands repertoire consists of high-octane, whiskey-soaked versions of the often-neglected Pigpen songs that are the bedrock foundation of the Grateful Dead .They don’t stop there, however, and one is never sure what may materialize in their barn-burning performances.
Their energetic stage show is anchored by lead singer, PETE CARONA, who’s unique style is Pigpen esque, but in No way presented as an impersonation. The dual guitar assault consists of “Stevie Ravioli” on Rhythm guitar and Steven Kim – AKA “The Kimchee Warrior” on Lead Guitar.
Chompin’ the keyboards and piano is “Berkeey Gator” and on bass guitar is “J.J. Gator” Rounding out the rhythm section on drums is Richard LaChomp.
The bands first show in 2017 was just supposed to be a One-Off gig to fill a 6.am time slot of another band who had cancelled a last minute festival spot. Our Manager and Founder of Southern Californias
Skull n Roses festival, Chris Mitrovich, had a last minute epiphany to fill the void with a fresh band to kickstart the day. Each band member came from completely different musical adventures, and genres but all shared a common Love for big time jams and Grateful Dead Music.
That day… The Alligators were born. We got such a wonderful response as we came off the stage that first show, all the people in attendance were saying to us “Where do we see you next?” So we rolled with it, and every show we play, the crowds get bigger and bigger, and the Jams keep gettin sweeter and sweeter! The gas pedal has been pinned to the floor ever since. The Alligators play year round spreading the gospel of fun-loving, ass shakin’, Boogie Woogie, Swamp-rockin’ Celebration – Jam Music. Come Chomp with us!
The BenCentrics is the combination of guitarist Ben Karmelich (Rusted Roses, Virtual Campfire, Mercy Road), singer Cathy Hackett (Eclectic Groove, Dead to the Core) and singer Tanya Ellis (Strawberry Moon, Lightning Dan and the Crawdads). Originally an acoustic trio that morphed into a full band, our shows have an “anything can happen” feel as you never know who’s going to show up and be part of the jam that night.
We started in 2014 and played extensively for 2 years. Since then, we get together on special occasions and we keep up with our motto of always being fun, different and with great harmonies.
Here’s a When I Go Away from one of our many reunions

Boot Juice hails from the Hills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. The band features electric and acoustic guitars, three vocalists, bass, drums, saxophone and trumpet. Inspired by the likes of The Band and Railroad Earth with an intensely energetic show reminiscent of Talking Heads, Boot Juice has been gaining buzz with their vibrant performances and party-sparking reputation. Shifting effortlessly between driving bluegrass and americana into cosmic rock’n’roll and swing. They deliver three part vocal harmonies and dynamic instrumental arrangements with a sultry dose of blues and soul. The collective effect leaves crowds little choice but to shake it down on the dance floor.
Boot Juice has been kicking around the west since 2017, leaving audiences happy, and dance floors sticky. They have kept an ambitious tour schedule, hitting the road in their 96’ International school bus, constantly adding to their ever-growing resume of festival and club appearances. Founding members Connor Herdt (acoustic guitar and vocals) and Evan Daly (electric guitar and vocals) have been friends since childhood. The two have been playing music together since their teenage years, combining their respective passions for americana and rock’n’roll songwriting with a desire to create a big sound that feels right at home in a barroom or on a large festival stage. Brett Worley (bass wizard) not only holds down the low end, he is also Evan’s cousin and has been touring with the band since the beginning. Brett’s melodic bass style has become a signature of the Boot Juice sound. Jess Stoll (vocals and artwork) joined the band shortly after, bringing another lead and backing voice to the group for deeply layered harmonies. She wears many hats for the band, acting as the artistic director for all of the band’s design concepts and providing the vision and drive necessary for a big production. Billy D. Thompson (drums) has been a staple of the Sacramento music scene for the past decade, graduating from Sacramento State University with a degree in Jazz Drum Performance. Billy brings his soul and funk influence into the Americana realm, adding yet another dimension to the band’s sound. In 2019 Boot Juice came into it’s full current lineup with the addition of its horn section. Caleb Sanders (alto and tenor saxophone) and Micah Marmorstein (trumpet) bring an infectious energy and tight horn harmonies to the stage, making it tough not to dance. It’s not uncommon to see these guys hanging off the rafters or running into the crowd by the end of the night.
Boot Juice plays music that will attempt to bring you to the street corner, the river side, or the open highway. They released their debut LP album, Speaking in Tones, in May 2019 and followed in March 2021 with their second record, Shifting gears. The group is currently tracking its third LP, which will be released in 2023.
Hailing from North Lake Tahoe, Coburn Station is dedicated to filling the mountains with cosmic vibrations via a soulful blend of rock n’ roll, groove, and psychedelia. With a knack for live improvisation, Coburn Station comes alive with the energy and spirit of the Sierras. The music pays tribute to the rockers of days past while incorporating elements that are new and powerful.
Showcasing the bands maturation is “Rusted Rose / This River,” Coburn Station’s two-Single release in December of 2022. Both tracks were recorded by Alexander Korostinsky of The Sextones at Archive Group Studios in Reno, NV. Also check out Coburn’s debut LP, “Coming Home”, which has become a local rock triumph. Consisting of 11 original tracks, the album displays a diverse blend of genres, which the band has dubbed “Mountain Rock”. Look out for Coburn’s follow up LP in 2024!
“North Lake Tahoe based Coburn Station – If you haven’t heard this band, we recommend giving them a listen. The sound is jamband-ish — the ‘ish’ is due to the band’s ability to pay homage to a classic sound while owning it in its own right.
The members of Coburn Station bill their music as ‘Mountain Rock’. ‘It’s just the energy, I think,’ said Dan McAlister, guitarist and lead vocalist. ‘You live in the mountains. There’s a way of going about your every day that kind of informs your taste, your outlook, your perception of the world. It’s just mountain living, and we’re a product of it—and it’s rock n’ roll’.
It most certainly is rock n’ roll, although not of any particular flavor. And, in a way, that’s another aspect of Coburn Station’s sound that qualifies it as mountain rock. It’s a mix of blues, folk and psychedelia that speaks to different regional influences. It’s the product of a resort town, a ‘mountain town’—and like its creators and so many others who visit and live in Truckee—the music has roots elsewhere.”
Jamie and Kellen Coffis, born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California, don’t tend to overthink thier music. Nothing in their repertoire is overwrought or outstrays it’s welcome. This is pure roots rock, focused on melody, harmony, rhythm and mood. There are echoes of The Byrds, Tom Petty and The jayhawks, and from years of touring, they have honed their sound into shimmering, high-energy rock and roll. They’re positioned in a long line of sibling duos that stretches back to the Delmores, the Louvins, and the Everly Brothers.
Brothers Conor and Ryan Ashe discovered the magical and rad ways of rock n roll music at the age of 12. Through the mystical spirals of their musical journey, they picked up a multitude of sonic influences ranging from classical to jam, psychedelic to Americana, prog to alternative rock. It was then that the lightning bolt struck, and they had an epiphany. Music was their calling. And they were going to answer one way or another.
They decided that the purpose of their band, Common Allies, would be to bridge the gap, not only among people of all kinds, but among music of all genres as well; ultimate inclusiveness. These brothers never gave up on their dream to pursue their passion. With such a degree of diligence and drive, they have landed several great opportunities and worked with some of the finest musicians in the business.
Their vocal precision and harmonic mastery procured them a gig covering for Art Garfunkel in Chicago when a blizzard grounded him in his hometown of New York City. Their eclectic knowledge and appreciation of the psychedelic 60’s awarded them an opening slot as a four-piece rock band for the legendary Jefferson Starship. They tackled the scene in Chicago then shipped their ambitions half way across the country to the rough and tumble entertainment capital of Los Angeles.
Although they’ve gained tons of experience, their journey is just beginning. Keep up with them and join the Alliance! They’d love to meet you on the run sometime!
Since 1987, Los Angeles-based band Cubensis has carried the torch in celebration of one of America’s most beloved touring bands, the Grateful Dead. Cubensis sets out to re-create the Grateful Dead experience by emulating the spirit of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and the rest of the legendary San Francisco jam band. Cubensis plays complete shows covering all eras of the Grateful Dead, and no night is ever the same. Cubensis is far more than just your standard cover band as they bring the magic and sounds to those longing for the live vibe that only the Grateful Dead was able to deliver.
Cubensis performs its critically acclaimed live performance of Grateful Dead show recreations to audiences and venues all over the western United States. Giving homage in a continually evolving artistic outlet, the band recreates the Grateful Dead experience with compelling accuracy. Like the Dead, the band explores and searches out all the possibilities of the music.
The group has been acclaimed for giving new life to the Grateful Dead’s material, bringing in new styles, new innovations, and new jam band enthusiasts, while at the same time remaining loyal to the original music and the original fans. With Cubensis, the band is more likely to go off and do a little exploration on its own terms, which is a more authentic experience than trying too hard to re-create something that was done a long time ago by people who invented it.
Cubensis is drawing national attention with their true-to-life performances. LA Weekly recently raved, “Cubensis plays with the same laid-back mastery as the real McCoy.” Big Brother skateboard magazine says Cubensis is “the nation’s premiere Dead tribute” and the OC Weekly declared them “the hottest Grateful Dead tribute act going.” OC Register affirmed Cubensis was “the best place to channel Jerry Garcia” and AOL Citybeat stated, “Cubensis is renown for whipping its faithful crowd into a swirling, psychedelic mass for three hours straight.”
Each night, Cubensis decides on performing songs from the hundreds that the Grateful Dead performed during their 35-year tenure as fathers of improvisational rock. As a chamber orchestra interprets Bach or Mozart, Cubensis presents a completely spontaneous set list, song by song, with uncanny faithful interpretation. Audience members encourage the band by calling out requests for favorite tunes. The band performed their 3000th show during their 2013 summer tour.
The group has its craft so well refined that even members of the Grateful Dead themselves, such as keyboardists Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters. Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir encouraged the band, saying, “Just love what you do…and of course, you do!”
Cubensis dips into every incarnation of the Dead, so most fans can experience shows that happened long before they were born. All eras of the Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band are represented. As with the originators, improvisation is key, so every night’s performance is unique and memorable.
In addition to regional touring with numerous sold out shows, Cubensis continues their commitment to community service every fall, when they perform a benefit show in partnership with the Rex Foundation, a non-profit, charitable organization established in 1983 by friends and members of the Grateful Dead, to further the organization’s philanthropic goals. Money raised at the benefit concert is contributed directly to the Rex Foundation, which provides grants to area community groups and non-profits.
Currently, the band is touring extensively with some 100 dates per year spread across the southwest from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, San Diego, Phoenix and Las Vegas. The last several years have seen them playing at medium to large sized theatres joined by special guests from the jamband scene such as Vince Welnick of the Dead, Chris Robinson and Marc Ford of the Black Crowes, Warren Haynes of Allman Brothers fame, Garcia collaborators David Nelson and Martin Fierro, and Barney Doyle of the Mickey Hart Band. The group has been invited back to the House of Blues in Hollywood, Anaheim and San Diego for over 50 engagements.
Cubensis’s authenticity and popularity is possible because of the Dead’s fervent fans, called Deadheads, who followed the group from show to show, who have now latched on to Cubensis. Unlike most bands, the Dead allowed its fans to tape performances. The tapes have been archived, and a database called DeadBase lists the order of songs done at every show. Thus, the band’s appearances and performances are highly anticipated.
The band doesn’t reproduce the Grateful Dead’s songs note for note—though it would be hard for most listeners to tell. The Dead’s music is highly improvisational, with rock, country and jazz influences. Cubensis members say there’s room for interpretation while staying true to the original. “It’s all about tapping into the same inspirational flow,” says Cubensis lead guitarist Craig Marshall. Dead guru Jerry Garcia once gave Marshall permission to recreate the Dead’s music, as long as he did a “good job” of it. “I told him we played all Grateful Dead songs,” recounts Marshall, to which Garcia replied, in mock surprise, “Oh yeah? So do we!”
Even the press has caught on to what they’re trying to do. LA Times observed, “As the tribute to one of the ultimate jam bands, their set lists are as free and frollicky as the crowd.” Big Brother skateboard magazine did a feature piece on Cubensis in its January 2002 issue and various newspapers and online publications have consistently praised the band, and its mellow but fanatical following. In the end, what Cubensis does is not just a tribute to the Grateful Dead but also a testament to the enormous number of unique setlists they performed in their long career. Cubensis seizes the framework of the original music and sees how much further it can be taken.
Joe Marcinek Band is an experience you will never forget. That is because each show features a different lineup of musicians creating a different set of music every night. The music is equal parts Chicago Blues, New Orleans Funk, Grateful Dead Psychedelia, and Jazz Fusion!

The group has featured many prominent special guests including Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads), Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band) George Porter JR (The Meters), Dennis Chambers, Eric Gales, JoJo Hermann (Widespread Panic) Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk), Nikki Glaspie (Nth Power), Alan Evans (Soulive), Kris Myer (Umphrey’s McGee), Tony Hall (Dumpstaphunk, Dave Mathews & Friends), Shaun Martin (Snarky Puppy, Kirk Franklin), Allen Aucoin (the Disco Biscuits), Marty Sammon (Buddy Guy), Jason Hann (String Cheese Incident / EOTO), Erik “Jesus” Coomes (Lettuce), Borahm Lee (Break Science), Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio Band), Mike Greenfield (Lotus), Borham Lee (Break Science), Steve Molitz (Phil Lesh & Friends / Particle) Joey Porter (The Motet / Juno What), Fareed Haque, Scott Metzger, Nate Werth (Snarky Puppy) Garrett Sayers (The Motet) Allie Kral (Yonder Mountain String Band), Freekbass, Vinnie Amico and Jim Loughlin (moe.) and more!

Hailing from North Lake Tahoe, California, Americana/roots rock band Dead Winter Carpenters has built a reputation for pouring their heart and soul into each performance. Over the past decade, the band has “been forging their own path with their progressive take on alt-country and Americana music”- Glide magazine. That progressive nature shines through loud and clear on the band’s upcoming new release Sinners ‘n’ Freaks releasing on April 24, 2020. Streaming on all platforms: https://smarturl.it/sinnersnfreaksDWC
The 5-song EP is DWC’s fifth studio effort and coincides with the band’s 10th anniversary and includes all original songs. The release is a celebration of the hard roads previously traveled and the road that lies ahead. Recorded in January 2020 at Baxter’s Ranch in Auburn, California the band found a masterful ally with a keen ear and sensibility in studio owner/engineer Matt Baxter. Born of an organic, roots based approach, Sinners ‘n’ Freaks rings true to the Sierra Nevada foothills.
The second single “‘Cornerstone’ a sweetly sentimental ballad” says American Songwriter is a tribute to Jesse’s mom to raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance link: https://give.ocrahope.org/DeadWinterCarpenters
Reminiscent of genre-benders like Jack White, Chris Thile, and Sam Bush, Dead Winter Carpenters harmoniously blend refined musical ability with a scarcely restrained tendency to let it all hang out. The result is a controlled burn, a riveting sound, and a connection with fans that sells out shows and has the band sharing stages with the likes of Jason Isbell, Greensky Bluegrass, and Hard Working Americans.
Members include Jesse Dunn (acoustic and electric guitars, vocals), Jenni Charles (fiddle, vocals), Nick Swimley (lead telecaster guitar, vocals), Brendan Smith (drums, vocals), and Jeremy Plog (bass, vocals). The new EP includes guest musician Jackie Greene (piano, Hammond B3 organ). A steadily touring band since forming in 2010, Dead Winter Carpenters has entertained growing crowds at notable festivals including High Sierra Music Festival and Strawberry Music Festival (CA), Del Fest (MD), Northwest String
Summit (OR), Harvest Music Festival (AR), and more. Dead Winter Carpenters is a band with the ambition, talent, and authenticity.
Direct From Los Angeles… Seventies-Inspired Funky Instrumental Jams From Former Gwen Stefani/Shania Twain Bass Player and His 5-piece Supergroup.
Derek Frank has built a career as a touring bass player, traveling the world with such icons as Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Air Supply, and many others. In the downtime on these gigs, he discovered a private music world inspired by the cultural debris of his 1970s childhood.
Years ago, the bassist-composer began to write the kind of music he used to hear on 1970s TV and movies. Today, Derek is leaning into the solo artist side of his career with his third solo album, Origin Story, released March 25, 2024 on all streaming platforms, CD, and vinyl. Origin Story boasts Derek’s strongest instrumental jazz-funk compositions to date.
“I used to love the music in Dirty Harry movies, and in the Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk television series,” the LA-based artist says. “When I finally found my voice as a solo artist, I decided to make that kind of music along with jazz and funk as the main influences.”
Derek and his handpicked five (sometimes seven)-piece band blend funk, blues, soul, jazz, southern rock, and seventies soundtrack music into a genre all their own. Derek’s compositions feature tight arrangements, slinky grooves, telepathic band interplay, and restrained virtuosity where chops are implied but not flaunted.
His solo work has garnered critical acclaim from such taste-making outlets as Bass Magazine, Guitar World Magazine, American Songwriter Magazine, Bass Player Magazine, Music Connection Magazine, “Everyone Loves Guitar Podcast,” and “The Bass Shed Podcast”, not to mention a Hollywood Independent Music Awards nomination for Best Instrumental Song. He’s earned favorable comparisons to Lettuce, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong, Snarky Puppy, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Karl Denson (who guests on Origin Story), and John Scofield. Previously, Derek has released Let The Games Begin (2009), and the aptly-titled Eleven Years Later (2020).
Derek has fond memories of growing up in Pittsburgh, watching 1970s TV and movies, and 1980s MTV. He discovered his love for the bass when he first picked one up off the wall of a music store while he was waiting for a guitar lesson. Derek later formally studied bass, and eventually moved to Los Angeles to be a professional musician.
Since then, Derek has emerged one of the most in demand touring and studio bassists in Los Angeles. He has worked with a “who’s-who” of A-list artists, including the aforementioned Gwen Stefani, Shania Twain, Shakira, Kelly Clarkson, Air Supply, Aly & AJ, Victoria Justice, Dancing With the Stars, Daniel Powter, Palaye Royale, Mindi Abair, The Boneshakers, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, and countless others.
As the title implies, Origin Story is an instrumental homage to his roots in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “I often reminisce about my childhood, thinking of the David Byrne lyric: ‘How did I get here?,’” Derek says. “The songs on this album loosely sketch experiences of my early years, before I discovered my calling and current profession as a bass player.”
In what’s become a tradition with Derek’s solo records, he opens the 8-song album up with the funky, 1970s cop chase song, “Demon On Wheels,” replete with wah wah bass. The name is pinched from the late 1960s cartoon Speed Racer, and the monster jam features Las Vegas’s Fat City Horns. The percolating 16th notes on “The Yinzer” tastefully touch on Jaco Pastorius, but the overall compositional structure nods to the work of Karl Denson (The Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the Rolling Stones) who makes a cameo on the track. The slippery fusion funk of “Paperboy Blues” recalls Head Hunters-era Herbie Hancock, and features abstract Jimmy Herring-like jazz guitar melodies.
Derek’s handpicked quintet features guitarist Joshua Ray Gooch (Derek’s longtime bandmate with Shania Twain), keyboardist Carey Frank (Social Distortion, Tedeschi Trucks Band), drummer Randy Cooke (Smashmouth, Brit Floyd), and percussionist Demian Arriaga (Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers). Also joining the party is keyboardist Matt Rohde (Jane’s Addiction, The Chicks), guitarist Anthony King (Buffy Sainte-Marie), The Fat City Horns, and guitarist Brent Mason, widely-regarded as one to the top 10 session guitarists of all time. Origin Story, and Derek’s previous album, were both produced by multiple Grammy award-winning producer Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tom Petty, Wilco, Sting) at his vibey, all-analog PLYRZ Recording Studio.
Up next, catch Derek and his band performing in sweaty nightclubs, at jazz & jam band festivals, and wherever live groove music is showcased. You can also see Derek rolling through town with major artists at a theater or arena near you—he’ll continue pulling double duty as a hired gun. “I feel grateful to have my day job as a session and touring musician,” he says. “But now I am also focusing on using my bass playing in service of my own music.”
Born in a garage in Long Beach, California, Delta Nove has put in some serious work since their first independent release in 1998, leaving a trail of deep funk, thunderous Brazilian drums, greasy horns, and psychedelic exploration wherever they go.
After over well over 1000 shows and years of national tours, 8 independent releases, and years of musical evolution, the band has truly developed into a singular powerhouse of sound and rhythm.
Delta Nove fans often call the sound of the band ‘world funk,’ a mixture of a psychedelic funk rock concert, Brazilian Carnaval, and Mardi Gras. Or, as one fan said, ‘it’s like Funkadelic got lost in the Amazon jungle.’ Funk, rock, samba, afrobeat, reggae, jazz, electronic escapades; these are all ingredients in the D No sound. Delta Nove’s most recent full release, Imaginary Conversations, is a reflection of that mash up of sounds. On this album, for the first time, the band enlisted outside help from legendary producers, including Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton) and Bruce Witkin (Adam Ant, Warren Zevon). Also, special guest George Clinton (of Parliament Funkadelic fame) joins the band on the track titled ‘Boom Bop.’
The live show is where the band shines, connecting with their energy to the audience, never failing to whip them into a full-on dance party. Each show features a unique set drawn from a huge catalog of original material and unique covers, sprinkled with lots of improvisation and on the spot creativity. Delta Nove has drank deep from the funk fountain of Parliament Funkadelic, afrobeat king Fela Kuti, and Brazilian legends like Jorge Ben and Tim Maia. Woven together with deep pocket drums, super funky guitar, chest thumping bass, powerful horns, cosmic keyboards, thick vocals, and always a massive amount of percussion; This is the D No sound.
The band has played throughout the country on many years of self-produced tours. Delta Nove has had the pleasure to share the stage with Dr. John, the String Cheese Incident, Roy Hargrove, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Dennis Coffey, members of Parliament Funkadelic, Poncho Sanchez, Burning Spear, Olodum, Gato Barbieri, Merle Saunders, King Sunny Ade, Ozomatli, Michael Franti, WAR and Lowrider Band. Members of the band have played with everyone from George Clinton and P Funk to Beck, the Wu Tang Clan, Belle and Sebastian, Van Halen, Mandrill, and many more.
Delta Nove continues to make their amazing music year after year, and have done their part to help define the sound of Southern Californian music and culture, as well as international cross-cultural pollination. With a long and storied trip across many years through cities, states, festivals, benefits, and beyond, Delta Nove never ceases to fire up a crowd with their rare form of world funk.Hailing from North Lake Tahoe, California, Americana/roots rock band Dead Winter Carpenters has built a reputation for pouring their heart and soul into each performance.
The sandy shores of Asbury Park, New Jersey are hallowed ground in the northeast; the rolling waves have ushered generations of venerated musicians to worldwide acclaim. Dogs in a Pile, an eclectic quintet, has emerged as the heir apparent to the town’s rich musical legacy. Merging funk, jazz, and rock and roll with psychedelia, the quintet presents a completely original vibe built on kaleidoscopic soundscapes eerily reminiscent of the days of yesteryear.
The Dogs employ a unified approach to performance and songwriting, crafting aural mosaics through adept instrumentation and humble precocity. As avid storytellers, they draw inspiration from personal experiences, balancing life’s foibles with ever-present youthful sanguinity.
Dogs began when Philadelphia University of the Arts guitar gun-slinger Jimmy Law began playing with young Joe Babick (drums), a student at the Count Basie Theater program in Red Bank, NJ. Lightning struck when they were introduced to Berklee School of Music student and bass player Sam Lucid, who immediately suggested fellow Berklee student and keyboard player Jeremy Kaplan. The addition of fellow Berklee student Brian Murray (guitar) in 2019 made for the quintessential final piece in the Dogs’ puzzle.
A string of successful local shows drove the development of a massive northeast fan base, affectionately known as the Dog Pound. The band’s astronomical growth culminated in an epic, sold-out performance at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park during the summer of 2021. Armed with a fresh batch of new material, Dogs in a Pile is taking its perpetually evolving testament to the Great American Songbook on tour in 2022, visiting plenty of new cities and spreading good music and good energy to good people along the way.
D.J. Williams is an acclaimed guitarist, singer-songwriter, and producer based in Denver, CO whose illustrious career has seen him traverse the globe, igniting stages ranging from intimate clubs to renowned festivals with his band’s fiery performances. Described by Premier Guitar as “… a monster… an inventive, effective, and ear-catching soloist, armed with a warm tone and superior chops,” Williams has unleashed his next creative achievement: new album “By Way Of RVA” on his own label Projekt Records.
Previous endeavors saw Williams tour with eclectic Richmond funk outfit DJ Williams Projekt and handle guitar for San Diego’s legendary tour-de-force, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. Since launching onto the scene, Williams has also had the honor of performing with some of live music’s greatest names including John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, Warren Haynes, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, John Oates, Hannibal Buress, Robert Randolph, Soulive, Slightly Stoopid, & many, many others!
Over the past 6 years Dusty Green Bones Band has covered a lot of ground. From Jackson Hole to San Diego this hard driving 5 – piece, consisting of guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass and drums, has helped spawn dance parties across the country. The music hard to describe, draws on influences from across the globe. Bluegrass, Latin, Jam-rock, eastern European, and other influences creep in and out at any particular show (not necessarily in that order). Creating a musical tapestry that flows seamlessly together. Formed in San Francisco in 2015, coming from different musical and cultural backgrounds the quintet noticed a chemistry and synergy often hard to find amongst musicians. They started playing shows and recording right away. Hitting the road shortly thereafter in a van named the White Frieghtliner. After a couple of years with the band gaining momentum and miles they got a bus named Krystal and traveled in that for a while until she broke down beyond repair. These days they just rent a van.
In 2019 the band celebrated the release of their 3rd studio project, Moonlight on the Mountains, recorded at Prairie Sun in Cotati CA. An EP consisting of 5 original songs and tunes. The same year headlined a show in Denver, featuring a hero of the band Tyler Grant. As well had bluegrass guitar superstar Billy Strings sit-in at a sold out show in Tahoe.
The two other studio releases the Constant Gardner (2017) a full length album and a self titled EP (2015) can be found on all major streaming platforms. With numerous festival bookings and a growing fan-base DGB are optimistic about the future. 2020 already includes bookings at String Cheese Incidents – Hog Farm Hangout in Norcal, competing in the Telluride Bluegrass Fest band Competition, Salmonfest in Alaska and more.
Keep an ear for these boys at a town near you!
SoCal’s finest A-list jammers formed The Festival Express in 2022, and the buzz is growing with each show! Fronted by strong female vocals (Joni Finkle — Shine On: The Pink Floyd Live Experience, Turn the Page) alongside powerhouse male vocalist Brian Warren (Electric Blue, What On Earth aka WTFB) the band’s striking vocal harmonies combine with instrumental virtuosity and deep jams to create an ethereal, almost spiritual presence.
Curated specifically for hard-core jam band fans, The Festival Express delivers an unexpected and unmatched array of styles, eagerly exploring the new generation of material by artists like Goose, Billy Strings, String Cheese Incident, Trey Anastasio Band, Tedeschi-Trucks, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Phish, and much more. Not forgetting the origins of the Festival Express train tour of the early 1970s, they of course include plenty of classic psychedelic-era tunes from the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, Pink Floyd, Derek and the Dominoes, and more. Original music is currently in process and plays into the same ethos the jam community craves.
The Festival Express is: Joni Finkle – vocals (Shine On: The Pink Floyd Live Experience, Turn the Page), Brian Warren – bass/vocals (What On Earth, Electric Blue), Brett Davis – guitar/vocals (Grandpas Grass, BD Experience), Ed Lyon – keys/vocals (What On Earth, Tenacious T), George Bernardo – drums/vocals (Hempstring Orchestra, Par Avion).
The Grass was forged during the turn of the century, by guitarist Brett Davis and singer/songwriter John Malsberger after meeting in a community college guitar class. They quickly became a band and soon found themselves opening for the likes of Merl Saunders, Keller Williams, Dark Star Orchestra, Tim Reynolds, and even The Yardbirds. But it wasn’t until they met vocalist Lisa Blue that the true path of the band was revealed. Even then it would take the band falling apart two years after it’s first album and a derailed attempt at a second, marriage and the birth of three children, and a four year hiatus to bring it to light. The Grass is stronger than ever before with Rich Kaylor and Chris Schmoke forming a powerhouse rhythm section, we’re ready to catch your ears and hook your heart. We are storytellers and jokers, protestors and thought provokers, we are the puller of emotions. We call our sound Garagedelic Soul Rock, as it is the easiest way to explain how our music feels. We traverse through multiple genres and influences, merging styles within songs. But we always stay true to our love of harmonies, infectious grooves, emotionally fueled guitar solos, and creative songwriting.
The band is releasing it’s fourth studio album, “Devil’s Inn”, in August of 2020. It’s the 3rd release in the last five years, and the third album recorded at the Compound Studio in Long Beach, CA. Working with Engineer/Producer Antoine Arvizu the band is extremely happy with the album and excited to get it heard. The ten song album will be available on vinyl, CD, and digital download, as well as any of your favorite streaming platforms.

he Hot Mountain Dips dish out blues-rock fusion for the soul. They are kindred spirits to the classic San Francisco music scene with original free-form funkified bluesy grooves similar to the improvisation-heavy bands of the 60s and 70s. Their originals hit with both sincerity and irreverence, tunneling deep in that greasy, loud rock ‘n roll of generations past. It’s the kind of music you could imagine yourself dancing recklessly to by a bonfire, surrendering to the primal energy of the past.
Constantly striving to be atypical, the Dips feature lead vocalist Dennis Mill injecting his hedonistic character into the drums. Dueling guitars and hypnotic bass lines venture through extended periods of improvisation. The harmonica and slide guitar riffs supplied by the renowned Jonny Mojo (Achilles Wheel, Keystone Revisited) mixed with the tones of Steve Zisman heats the dips to new levels. Their debut album is expected in early 2023 and features special guests Pete Grant (Grateful Dead/New Riders of the Purple Sage) and Darby Gould (Big Brother & Holding Co./Jefferson Starship) with the help of Oz Fritz behind the recording console (Primus, Oysterhead, Tom Waits, Buckethead). The arrow is pointing up for Hot Mountain Dips!
Members:
Dennis Mill – Drums/Vocals
Jonny Mojo – Guitar/Slide/Harmonica/Vocals
Steve Zisman – Guitar
Zach Partain – Bass/Vocals
Hot Mountain Dips played some very memorable shows recently with the likes of David Nelson (New Riders of Purple Sage/Jerry Garcia), John Kadlecik (Furthur/DSO), Pete Grant (Grateful Dead/NRPS), Peter Rowan, Mark Karan (The Other Ones/Ratdog), Sunshine Garcia Becker (Furthur), Jacklyn LaBranch & Cheryl Rucker (JGB), Jason Hann (String Cheese Incident), Barry Sless (Bob Weir/Phil Lesh), Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship/Hot Tuna/Quicksilver Messenger Service), Jay Lane (Primus/Ratdog/Wolf Bros), Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters) and Reed Mathis (Billy + The Kids).
Hunter & The Dirty Jacks are a band born on the California highways from its very first days over seven and a half years ago, traveling up and down the West Coast, expanding out, and fine-tuning a southern rock-infused sound reminiscent of the 1970s – a working band constantly touring beyond a net, performing without setlists night after night, and always playing off the crowd while blending a melting pot of rock, blues, country, folk, and psychedelic improvisational jamming.

Jelly Bread has risen from Reno/Lake Tahoe area favorites into a powerhouse quintet delivering their high-energy, chameleonic playlist throughout the United States. Jelly Bread’s distinct style is identified by a blend of desert roots-rock meeting the urban tones of soul, dashed with a splash of funkiness. Exceptional songwriting and storytelling interlaced with four part harmonies, intricate “in-the-pocket” drum and bass grooves, swampy lap steel guitar, dirt under the fingernails guitar licks, tasty talkbox, “take-’em-to-church” organ, come together into a sound that is downright appetizing.
Here, There, & Everywhere, Jelly Bread’s new album was released in early October 2015. The album was mixed by renowned engineer/producer Justin Phelps (Cake, Galactic, Fruition, The Mars Volta, The Neville Brothers, and Dead Kennedys among many others). Jelly Bread has performed shows all throughout the U.S. and landed direct support for the likes of Robert Cray, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Rusted Root, JJ Grey, Dragon Smoke (members of Galactic), The Motet, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Pimps of Joytime, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Orgone, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Carolyn Wonderland, and The California Honeydrops. Featuring some of Northern California’s finest musicians, Love Mischief is a force to be reckoned with. Join us on our journey to explore the edges of the Jam.”
Note for note, Marc Ford ranks as one of the world’s preeminent guitarists. Even so, his songcraft commands the utmost respect. Ford is no one trick pony. Keyboardist Johnny Neel once said: “Marc Ford’s an actual genius. He has the best guitar sound I’ve ever heard.”
Ford’s career began in Los Angeles during the 1980s. His group, Burning Tree, captured the essence of his guitar virtuosity and songwriting.
He joined the Black Crowes in late 1991. Ford toured and recorded on three of the Crowes’ finest albums–The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Amorica, and Three Snakes and One Charm. Ford’s tenure in the Crowes found the group operating at a zenith. He rejoined the Crowes in 2005-2006 when they toured and released The Lost Crowes–two albums the band never released when he was a member.
In 2002, Ford released his first solo album, It’s About Time. During this era, Ford experienced the highs and lows of surviving in a cutthroat music business through the years as well as being a dedicated family man. Ford’s following solo albums included Weary And Wired (2007), The Fuzz Machine (2010) and Holy Ghost (2014).
Ford won a NAACP award (John F. Kennedy counts as one of the few other Caucasians bestowed the honor) for his work on the Ben Harper and Blind Boys of Alabama album There Will Be A Light.
Also, Ford’s role as a record producer allowed him to use his gift of tone and a powerful ability to listen. Artists he produced include Ryan Bingham, Pawnshop Kings, Steepwater Band, Chris Lizotte, Phantom Limb and Republique du Salem. Marc Ford exists as a musical architect of the highest order.
Through his career Marc Ford has performed and recorded with Izzy Stradlin, Gov’t Mule, The Jayhawks, The Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers, Federale, Widespread Panic, Blue Floyd, Booker T. Jones, Ivan Neville and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell.
The group on The Vulture, The Neptune Blues Club, recorded their debut album in 2009, which charted at #15 for two weeks on the blues charts. This versatile ensemble includes Mike Malone (vocals, harp, keys), John Bazz (bass), Anthony Arvizu (drums) and Ford. Mr. Ford unleashes his hypnotic guitar skills on these soulful tunes.
The Vulture was recorded on analog tape at mastermind John Vanderslide’s Tiny Telephone Studios located in the mission district of San Francisco. The Vulture emits Ford’s greatest strengths: soulful musicianship, memorable songs and an emotive groove.
Ford explained the ethos of these new compositions: “If Holy Ghost was Sunday morning, then The Vulture is Saturday night…”
The opening track–”Devil’s In the Details”–emerges as one of Ford’s finest. The tune operates in his electric wheelhouse. He’s like Clint Eastwood with a guitar. The well-crafted “The Same Coming Up” clocks in at one minute and fifty seconds emitting joyous rock n roll. “All We Need To Do Is Love” eases the listener into pastoral reflection. “This Ride” inspires reckless abandon. The title track contains Ford’s signature snakebite guitar work as he delivers a savage truth in the lyrics: “Got a head full of diamonds/And a nose full of snow/You leave a trail of destruction/Everywhere that you go/Got a shrug of the shoulder/For all that you stole.”
“Arkansas Gas Card” stands as one of the group’s stellar numbers that transfers with brilliance to a live audience. “Old Lady Sunrise” travels into sonic backwaters of a low-country swamp like some vintage STAX Records jewel. The gospel-laced “Deep Water” explores redemptive sanctuaries where matters of the soul are at stake.
“Shalimar Dreams” augments a gritty R&B, rock-n-roll magic in a mesmerizing sound that surrounds the listener. The last cut, “Girl of Mine”, is a love song Ford sings and provides steel on as the group provides a sparse, yet concise musical backdrop.
It’s harvest time for Marc Ford. Over the years he’s created his own stellar sound that meets all the rigid standards of excellence. The Vulture represents another timeless volume in Marc Ford’s inimitable musical journey…
Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.
Melvin and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. John Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocal duties, John-Paul McLean’s savory bass, Jeremy Hoenig on the drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Along with Lady Chi & Darlene Coleman on back-up vocals, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.
Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe”. Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!
MELVIN SEALS & JGB:
Melvin Seals – Hammond B3 Organ, Keyboards & Vocals
John Kadlecik – Electric Guitar & Lead Vocals
John-Paul McLean – Bass
Jeremy Hoenig – Drums
Mestizo Beat is an Afro-Latin Soul Ensemble based out of Los Angeles, CA. They are an instrumental group that blend the sounds of early 70’s Funk & Soul, Latin Jazz, Afrobeat, Psychedelic Rock and Hip-Hop. The group is highly inspired by artists such as War, James Brown and the JB’s, Mongo Santamaria, Fela Kuti, Parliament Funkadelic, and The Meters. The band’s music carries a certain sense of nostalgia, using their creativity to fuse the old with the new, constantly paying homage to the greats who came before.
Mestizo Beat was formed in late 2016 in Topanga, CA by the Magaña Brothers, Aquiles and Agustin Magaña. The band name is influenced by their Salvadoran roots and their aspiration to provide music that will set fire to dance floors. Both working musicians in the Los Angeles music scene, they wanted to combine their efforts to create compositions inspired from some of their favorite artists that would focus on elements of tight rhythms, big horn sections, and instrumental arrangements. Quickly organizing a collective of musicians to help jump start the project they began performing, writing and recording. After recording their first few songs at “Killion Sound” in North Hollywood, CA the two were fascinated by the experience of recording live on to an analog tape machine, producing a feeling and sound that is not easily replicated with digital technology. Aquiles and Agustin knew there was no turning back and spent the next few months collecting analog studio equipment and vintage gear, building their own home studio which is now known as “The Roadhouse” located on Topanga Canyon Boulevard.
The band is built around “The Core Four” led by Aquiles (guitar) and Agustin (drums), backed up by Pedro Flores (percussion) and Jose Castro (bass). What is unique about Mestizo Beat’s sound is the musicians surrounding the four players. Aside from the core members, the lineup often fluctuates inviting different horn players, keyboardists and guest singers to jam and create with them. Over the years the band has grown with members rounding out to an eight-piece band and has now become a national touring act while producing a music catalogue with the help of several independent labels such as Colemine Records, Common Good Records, and California Soul Music.
The Mestizo Beat live experience displays a very intriguing contrast of the group’s versatility by being spontaneous though elaborate, liberated while under control, and explosive but still maintaining the solidarity as a unit within the group. One can expect high energy and an ecstatic delivery of rhythm and harmony at every live performance. With a mighty brass section that reminds us of Kool & the Gang or Fred Wesley’s JB’s to blazing guitar solos reminiscent of Hendrix and Santana, ground shaking bass lines and soulful melodic organ solos, all which ride on the foundation of flavorful Latin rhythms and rock-solid drum grooves. Their passion for this music is a force that cannot be denied, igniting the dance floor into an electric frenzy, leaving your soul with the vibration of love. It is their legacy to share their appreciation for this music with the world, to spread the message of unity and equality while embracing the beauty of diversity and cultural differences by living, loving and dancing with one another in peace and harmony.

In times of Covid, the group has continued to show their resilience and creativity to pull together virtual performances and videos which can be found on YouTube and social media. That said, MUSD Music looks forward to the time we can come together in person and create music as a group. Nothing beats live music!
It’s full steam ahead for Midnight North after an exciting year featuring major festival plays, nationwide tours, and the release of a second live record. Rolling Stone hailed Midnight North as the “Best New Act” in its review of 2018’s Peach Music Festival saying the band “takes the best parts of roots music and weaves them into a tapestry of rock and Americana”.
In the summer of 2018, Midnight North released their second live record, Selections from the Great American Music Hall. This 8 track album features original live staples like “Everyday” and “Playing a Poor Hand Well”, covers like John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” and the Dead’s “The Music Never Stopped”. The concert album also features guest appearances by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, members of Twiddle, and the band’s hometown horn section, The Northbound Horns.
Immediately after their sophomore studio release, 2015’s Scarlet Skies, Midnight North – fronted by lead songwriters Elliott Peck & Grahame Lesh and strong rhythm section work from bass player Connor O’Sullivan and drummer Nathan Graham – began touring the country in earnest, visiting the East Coast and the Midwest for the first time in summer 2015. The band wrote the majority of 2017’s Under the Lights in the following months, and the lyrical road themes – the initial excitement, the longing for home, and the inherent need to keep moving – shine through. Midnight North Live“Under the Lights is the perfect title for this collection of songs,” said O’Sullivan. “These songs and lyrics are about being a band of musicians on the road away from home. Songs literally performed and tested under the lights at countless venues across the US.”
2019 and beyond will continue the growth for Midnight North, as the expanding discography and consistent national touring help pave the way for more and more fans to discover the band. “These songs tell our story, at least up to this point,” said Lesh. “Our job is to sing you these stories as honestly as we can and transport you into our world for an hour or two.”
Rolling Stone hailed Midnight North as the “Best New Act” in its review of the Peach Music Festival in the summer of 2018.

Scott Pemberton’s sound is much like the vibe of his native Portland: freaky, fun and just the right amount of weird. The best way to categorize his music is with the moniker “Timber Rock”. Scott naturally applies his own lens/stamp to the sounds of the Pacific North West, the region he has always called home. The deep jazz, NW rock/grunge, blues roots and the west coast funk. It’s all there, and often all in the same song. Listeners are finding this honest, original and to-the-point music refreshing and fun.
The mastery of his guitar playing combined with the fun recklessness of his songwriting show that the rules of songwriting and playing the guitar no longer exist for him. Scott plays with the uninhibited joy and intensity of someone who recognizes that every time we make music is an honor and a gift.

Strawberry Moon (2015-2018) assembled for the pure love of playing music, all genres. It was a band that specifically wrote and performed music that provokes positive energy. You might call it a throwback 60’s 70’s vibe. All of us in the band embrace these decades as the foundation of what we think is powerful music. We have elements of psychedelic jams, groovy driven back beats, melody, guitar riffs, improvisation and story motivated songwriting. We interpret, try not to copy and ultimately jam some cracker funk while also tearing into some latch key suburbanite blues. Basically, We have fun experimenting with sound and let what happens musically, happen.
These days, John can be found on the air at KMMT, Mammoth’s radio station. Tanya is singing with Lightning Dan & the Crawdads, a Grateful Dead tribute band out of SoCal. Twenty-five years into a celebrated career is an unlikely time to switch things up, but The Mother Hips have never been ones to follow convention. For their brilliant and exhilarating new release, ‘Chorus,’ the California stalwarts turned their recording process on its head, laying down elaborate studio demos to serve as a detailed roadmap for the album a full year before official recording sessions began. It was a step that offered both the time and the space to fully realize their music like never before, and the result is the most refined and cohesive album in The Mother Hips’catalog, one that marks the beginning of what promises to be their most creative and prolific chapter yet.
“We never did a lot of pre-production on our previous records,” says drummer John Hofer. “We had a system where we’d start recording and lock in the arrangements as we went, which was a fun way to work because you never knew how the songs were going to turn out.”
That spontaneity has always suited The Mother Hips, a band whose lofty reputation was built on the back of their spellbinding live shows, but by pushing themselves to work in a completely new way on ‘Chorus,’ they unlocked a slew of artistic rewards.
“Starting with these really fleshed out studio demos was exciting because it meant we could listen back months later with fresh ears,” says singer/guitarist/songwriter Tim Bluhm. “We could realize that a song might be more effective if we played it a little faster or sang it a little higher. It was like having a second chance to get everything just right.”
Bluhm co-founded The Mother Hips along with fellow guitarist/singer/songwriter Greg Loiacono while both were studying at Chico State in the early 90’s. Performing at frat parties quickly gave way to club shows, regional touring, and national buzz, and before they’d graduated from school, the band was signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings on the strength of their debut album, ‘Back To The Grotto.’ Over the ensuing two-and-a-half decades, they would go on to release eight more studio albums as they cemented their status as architects of a new breed of California rock and roll, one equally informed by the breezy harmonies of the Beach Boys, the funky roots of The Band, the psychedelic Americana of the Grateful Dead, and the soulful twang of The Byrds. Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits,” their headline and festival performances became the stuff of legend and helped them earn dates with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”
It’s been five years since the band’s last studio release of new material, though, and it’s been a tumultuous time on multiple fronts to say the least. Members grappled with immense changes in their personal lives and pursued a variety of outside and solo projects. Bluhm nearly died in a speed flying accident when he slammed into a pile of felled trees at roughly 35 miles-per-hour, and his path to healing was an arduous and daunting one. For the band, the ability to revisit the songs they’d been writing and demoing during such turbulent times with the distance and perspective that comes from a year of personal growth and recovery proved to be invaluable.
“When we actually started recording these songs for the album, there was this whole new level of energy and inspiration and excitement to it,” reflects Loiacono. “There was such a positive vibe in the studio, and the emotions and the performances we captured were so much more fully realized because of it.”
The band is quick to credit part of that excitement to their new partnership with Blue Rose Music, whose support enabled the band to team up with acclaimed producer Karl Derfler (Tom Waits, Roky Erickson) and enter the studio in Oakland without the traditional time and budgetary constraints that might have inhibited the free flow of creativity or the exploratory spirit that defines the album.
“When you feel like you’re believed in, it’s amazing what you can do,” reflects Bluhm. “Blue Rose made us feel like what we were creating really mattered, and that feeling alone just doubles the energy available for any creative endeavor.”
The effect is clear from the opening moments of ‘Chorus,’ a richly melodic album that finds the Hips embracing their rock and roll roots with a renewed sense of vitality. They channel Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis on “Didn’t Pay The Bill,” tap into 70’s cosmic country on the soaring “It’s Alright,” and take a blistering turn into riff rock with “Hi Note Hitters.”“Clean Me Up,” meanwhile, calls to mind the rich harmonies ofalt-country contemporaries The Jayhawks, and the driving “I Went Down Hard” (a rare co-write between Bluhm and Loiacono) addresses Bluhm’s brush with mortality head-on through lyrics written and demoed from a hospital bed.
“At that point, I’d been pretty much confined to a hospital bed for four months,” says Bluhm, who often pulls his lyrical inspiration from dreams rather than his waking life. “Writing about the mindset and the events that led to the physical state I was in made a lot of sense to me.”
The band also made another obvious—though no less revelatory—decision by inviting their old friend Jackie Greene, once dubbed “the Prince of Americana” by the New York Times, to play bass on the record.
“I was familiar with Jackie’s bass playing and I always thought he had a great feel,”says Hofer, “but I turned out even happier than I thought I’d be in the end. Jackie approached the bass on this album like a songwriter rather than a bass player, and I was always so impressed with the choices he made. He really played to the songs.”
Greene is but one star in the wider universe of The Mother Hips, and cultivating an inclusive community of music lovers and fellow artists has always been central to their ethos. From the Hipnic—their intimate music festival held annually in Big Sur—to Hipsmas—their annual holiday series in San Francisco—the band has long prided themselves on carving out their own self-sustained, DIY ecosystem for touring, recording, and releasing music, and they’ve worked hard to foster meaningful relationships both with and amongst their extremely dedicated fanbase. That sense of community is, in fact, where the album’s title came from.
“We were thinking about the Greek chorus, and how they were sort of the interpreters, the collective consciousness of the play,” says Loiacono. “That led to thinking about the wider Mother Hips world and all the fans who are such an important part of everything we do. For us, ‘Chorus’ means that there’s more to The Mother Hips than just the musicians and the lead singers. There’s this whole other side to the band that’s made up of everybody who’s part of this journey with us.”
Twenty-five years on, the journey continues with more joy and meaning and depth for the band and their fans than ever before. The Mother Hips may have turned their recording process upside down on ‘Chorus,’ but some things will never change.
The Nth Power believes in the healing power of music. This all-pro alignment of sharp and seasoned musical vets delivers a transcendent blend of soul, funk, rock and rhythm and blues with multi-part vocal harmonies and songs that inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goose bumps.
The band’s electric live performances have been flooring audiences ever since the group formed in New Orleans during an impromptu jam during Jazzfest nearly a decade ago. After an EP, studio album and two live albums, the band returned in 2021 in support of their second full-length studio release, Reverence, which was featured on the first-round nominations ballot for the 2022 Grammy Awards.
The Nth Power hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races and creeds, but the universal language of love and its power to change lives is the thread that binds them. The trio features drummer Nikki Glaspie, whose credentials include Beyonce, Maceo Parker, Dumpstaphunk and countless more; guitarist and lead vocalist Nick Cassarino, known best for his previous work with Jennifer Hartswick and Big Daddy Kane; and bassist Nate Edgar of reggae giant John Brown’s Body.
“It’s my dream team,” said Glaspie, “each one of us is a songwriter, so when we get together, everything becomes that much stronger.” Beyond raw skill, however, Glaspie cites a deep spiritual connection as the glue that binds them together. “Music is what brought us together, but it’s the spiritual bond that makes us play so in touch with each other,” she explained.
The Nth Power’s inspirational sets have floored audiences at music festivals like Electric Forest, High Sierra, Peachfest, North Coast Music Festival and Hulaween. They maintain New Orleans as their spiritual home, and the celebratory essence of that city’s music culture is audible in each performance – garnering high profile festival appearances and national acclaim from outlets like Relix, Modern Drummer, Huffington Post, Glide, Consequence, Okayplayer and Sirius XM.
Simply put, there is something pretty magical happening in this band, and they’re only just getting started. “Were going as far as you can go on the planet Earth and playing music,” explains Glaspie, “I don’t know how many times we’ve said it, we are so blessed.”

” Sometimes we listen to music without really hearing it. However, when we’re ready to open up and experience a thing as it truly is, well, it can feel like a baptism. What they do is rock ‘n’ roll but done so fundamentally right it makes you want to kiss them when they power down their instruments. This night, as the festival raged like we’d never seen before on a Sunday eve, Tracorum embodied our collective high spirits and unspoken ache at this experience coming to a close and put those elements to work in some of the best boogie-minded, straight-great rock heard all weekend. Comparisons to The Band and studio aces The Wrecking Crew flitted through my brain as I danced to the heart of this fleeting makeshift town next to my loose-limbed sisters and brothers. Every aspect was right on the money and every man showed himself a massive talent on their respective instruments, pouring soul into every note, their conviction becoming our own.”

The sound of Wolf Jett will make you dance, sing… and possibly even howl! Their all-original songs are an upbeat celebration, infusing folk, soul and Americana into what they call “Cosmic Mountain Music.” Co-founded by two life-long friends and musical partners, Wolf Jett combines the southern-fried vocals of Tennessee-born frontman Chris Jones with Jon Payne’s endlessly groovy drums. They perform with Duncan Shipton on bass, as well as a cast of all-stars, including female vocals (Laura T Lewis, Allyson Makuch), electric guitar (Will Fourt, Rory Cloud), and occasionally keys (Alex Jordan and others).
Chris and Jon have been performing together since they were 12, and they conceived Wolf Jett in late 2019 as a tribute to Chris’s maternal grandparents. Prior to the release of their debut album the world was brought to a halt by pandemic and all their shows were cancelled, so they constructed an analog studio at Jon’s residence called “House on a Hill” in Boulder Creek, CA. Tragically, CZU Lightning fires ripped through Big Basin State Park in August 2020, consuming the house and studio along with it. Their story was featured in SF Chronicle, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury, and Santa Cruz Sentinel. Seeing an opportunity to help their community heal, they recorded a breathtaking emotional live video among the ashes and rubble of where their home once stood with the help of friends, The T Sisters. Their song “Garden of Pain” has since become a local favorite.
Wolf Jett’s latest release (March ‘24), “Time Will Finally Come,” was produced by Jonathan Kirchner and is available on streaming, vinyl and CD. They have performed with California Honeydrops, Allen Stone, Cedric Burnside, Fruition, The Brothers Comatose, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, The Mother Hips, and The Sam Chase. Their albums feature guests Jason Crosby (Jackson Browne), Stelth Ulvang (Lumineers), James Deprato (Chuck Prophet), and Eric Yates (Hot Buttered Rum). Currently in Radio rotation on local CA stations KPIG, KZSC, KRML, KBCZ, KSQD, as well as WNCW in North Carolina and WDVX in Tennessee. A new album is forthcoming in early 2026.
Wreckless Strangers is a collective of six seasoned Bay Area musicians known for their collaborative songwriting and high-energy live shows, performing an infectious blend of music they call “California Americana Soul.” The band features Amber Morris (Premier Bay Area vocalist and voice coach – members of Journey, Eric Martin Band) on vocals; David Noble (Poor Man’s Whiskey, Pardon The Interruption) on lead guitar, vocals; Joshua Zucker (The Jones Gang, Rowan Brothers) on bass; Austin de Lone (Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, The Fabulous Thunderbirds) on keys, vocals; Mick Hellman (The Go To Hell Man Band) on drums and vocals; and Rob Anderson (repeat world champion cyclist) on guitar. Over the course of their six years together, the Wreckless Strangers have released two records and become fan favorites at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Their latest album, “When the Sun and a Blue Star Collide”, was produced by GRAMMY-winning artist/producer/guitarist Colin Linden (Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Keb’ Mo’, Alison Krauss & Robert Plant).
Jam rock meets prog rock! WTFB was formed to bring jam band fans something unique and spectacular: English progressive rock masterpieces by bands like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, etc., performed alongside American jam/psychedelic/funk tunes by artists like Phish, Frank Zappa, moe., String Cheese Incident, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, Widespread Panic, Parliament-Funkadelic, ALO, etc.— played live, loud, and locally. The musicianship is astonishing as the band moves between intricately composed passages and wide-open improvisational stretches.
Keyboardist Ed Lyon (Electric Blue, Mr. Ectomy, Cubensis pre-2001 , The Rum Runners) and drummer Brad Rhodus (RTA, The Rum Runners, Cubensis) had been playing together for several years in the Rum Runners when the WTFB concept began to crystalize in 2014. They called some longtime friends and former bandmates… guitarist/violinist Paul Bonanno (Mr.Ectomy) and bassist Warren Kaye (RTA), who were crazy enough to give it a shot. Powerhouse vocalist Brian Warren (Electric Blue) heard about the project, showed up at an early-stage garage jam session, and was eagerly welcomed aboard after singing just one song. From those earliest jam sessions in 2014, the band knew something special was taking place…
Well-curated set lists are a hallmark of WTFB, drawing from the best songsof disparate genres, making them fit together in a way that somehow makes sense. Like all good jam bands, every show is different, and there is high-energy improvisation—and like all good prog bands, the composed segments are extremely well-rehearsed. It’s the best of both worlds.
WTFB currently plays in and around the beach cities of Southern California. Please enjoy our attempt to enjoy all that music has to offer, even the stuff that lives close to the edge…
